Being Sorted
Sortiert werden
I learned early that you get sorted. People take a quick look, decide which box you belong in, and after that you are it. I have sat in several, in boxes quite far apart, and none of them fitted. You can be annoyed about that. At some point you stop and get on with your own stuff.
What always told me something were things that either work or do not. A machine runs or it does not. A note sits or it sits beside. A calculation adds up or something is missing. That is an uncomfortable kind of feedback, but it does not lie and it takes no interest in who people take you for. I get along with it better than with most conversations about me.
I am not someone who leaves things half done. When something has me, it has me properly — nights and weeks, and eventually I know more about it than is good for me. That is a strength and a problem in the same package. I do go down blind alleys. I am impatient with idling, with forms, with meetings where nothing is decided — and patient to the point of stubbornness when there is a fault in something I have not found yet. It stays there, and so do I, until it is gone.
I taught myself most of it, because nobody was there to show me, or because the direct route was closed — prerequisites, papers, money that was not there. You can complain about that or just do it anyway. It takes longer that way. It also makes you more thorough, because you have to have understood every step yourself and cannot simply pass it on. What you have had to fight for, you do not put down again so quickly.
I have got around. Workshops, stages, plants, laboratories, and a fair amount of it in places and situations nobody chooses, with people who were not doing well at the time. That shapes you differently than a seminar does. I have seen from the inside how institutions work and how businesses work, and I know how differently the two tick and where the lie sits in each. What has stayed with me is less knowledge than a sense of whether something holds or only looks like it.
That sounds like a jumble and is not one. Everything I do comes down to the same question: how does something behave under load, and where does it tip. A component, a population in nature, an event with too many people, an argument — for the method it makes no difference. The boundaries between subjects are administrative. I never saw why I should keep to them when the thing itself does not know them. That has caused me a certain amount of trouble and I will go on doing it anyway.
I do not fit in a drawer and I have stopped treating that as a problem. It costs something: you explain yourself constantly, you fall through the grid, nothing is handed to you, and to some people I am simply hard work. They are not entirely wrong about that. It also yields something: I see connections you do not see if you have sat in one field for forty years. I would not trade one for the other.
What I actually care about is a plain thing: that what I say holds. So nothing stands here that I cannot back up. Finished means finished, in progress means in progress, and what I do not know stands as an open question rather than as a clever formulation that feigns certainty. The publications are open and identified, so that people can check rather than having to believe me. That occasionally costs impact. Otherwise a commitment is worth nothing.
And all of it comes out of one pair of hands. Researched, calculated, built, written, checked, published — with what is available, and with the care you bring when nobody looks it over afterwards. That is not an excuse. It is the reason I can stand behind every line.
Solutions interest me more than diagnoses. Naming a problem is the start, not the goal. And if there is going to be work, then work somebody other than me gets something out of — those who come after us, the natural world, and those who have no voice of their own.
